The Archaeological Museum of Andros composes a modern museum of 1500 m2 area and it is in the islands capital city Chora. It was founded in 1981, a legacy of the Institution Basilis and Eliza Goulandris.

Except of the exhibiting rooms it includes preservations lambs store rooms, synchronous optical-acoustic system and security systems. The first floor extend hospitality to the copy of Rigas Feraios Chartas informing boards, 3 Mycenaistic vases and things found from the geometrical settlement of Zagora including photographs and images of the area, of the houses and temple, so as to give the visitor’s the possibility to derive all the demanded information.

In the staircase and the ground floor sculptures and inscriptions of the Archaic, Classical, Roman, Hellenistic, Probyzantine, Byzantine, and after Byzantine Times are exhibited. What causes impression in the Hellenistic and Roman sculptures collection, is the supernatural sizes statue of a naked man known as «Hermes of Andros», Romaic copy of the 1st cent. b.C. (of the earlier copper statue of Praxitelis) which was found in 1833 in Paleiopoli as well as the womanish statue of the «Megali Irakliotissa» type the same periods and origins with the previous one.

The museum, an elegant and modern building is close to the Archaeological museum, and belongs to the Vasilis and Eliza Goulandris Institution. The museum has panhellenic uniqueness. It is composed of two wards, the old one surfaces 200 m2 built in 1979 and the new one, across the road, total surfaces 1000 m2. The old ward extends hospitality to a permanent sculptures exhibition of the creations of the sculptor M. Tompros and creations of Tsarouchis, Gikas, Moralis, Basiliou, Takis, Fasianos etc. In the new ward there is also a section of the Institutions collection where exhibitions take place during all the year.

The museum has a worldwide brilliancy. The artistic activity which characterizes and discerns the museum except of the rich, permanent exhibition which entertains it concerns many shapes of the humans artistic expression. Painting, sculpture and photography this year have presented strong emotions to the amateurs who come from all over the world all the year to visit the exhibition which is unique and of course complete and representative whether it is thematic or monographic.

The Museum is located in the east side of the town Chora in the big square of the Unknown Seaman where the homonymous statue which has been artistically worked by sculptor Tombros Michalis, domiates.

In the museum are exhibited ships images, objects and historical elements, as well as paintings.


The Library presents varied activity. Except of the philosopher exceptional books, it disposes a big number of old editions and courses of books preservation and binding take place.


The institution was founded in 1994 in Chora.

Every year are organized varied activities titled PLOES. Also extends hospitality to a high levels exhibitions. During the winter period courses of Byzantine music and teaching of musical instruments (Mandolin, guitar, piano) and pottery.
